The National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation have partnered with State Arts Agencies of the United States to support the expansion of Poetry Out Loud, which encourages the nation's youth to learn about great poetry through memorization and performance. This exciting program helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about their literary heritage.

Poetry Out Loud uses a pyramid structure that begins at the classroom level. Winners will advance to the school-wide competition, regional, then to the state competition, and ultimately to the National Finals. Participating at the Foundry will be Eleven High Schools with eleven students from the metro area for this regional competition.

The Foundry Art Centre 2009 Winner of the Regional competition was Peter Winfrey, St. Louis University High School. Winfrey was the 2009 Missouri State Champion and finished in the top twelve in the national competition in Washington, DC.
